Artist: BANKSY

Title: VICTORIA
Retail Price: $75,000.00 Gallery Price: $50,000.00
Medium: SCREENPRINT ON PAPER
Description: Queen Victoria UNSIGNED NUMBERED STAMPED AND COMES WITH COA FROM POW was the Queen of England from 1837 until 1901, during her reign of some 67 years she became famous for a number of things but most notably and most relevant, was her assertion that women were ‘not able to be gay’ – it is speculated that in actuality no-one within Queen Victoria’s counsel wanted to enlighten her about lesbianism, and as such she didn’t believe it existed, and thus lesbianism was never illegal in Britain, contrary to the received opinion. But, the popular myth, implies that Queen Victoria vetoed the bill on making lesbianism illegal, because, she was in fact attracted to women. And this is precisely what Banksy takes aim at in this piece. The bold maroon background certainly gives the piece a regal impression, and Queen Victoria in her full regalia, crown and with the addition of high-heeled boots and suspenders seems to be fairly relaxed as she sits on the face of another woman, also in suspenders. This is an incredibly bold piece by Banksy and no doubt would have resulted in his death had he been around at the time of Queen Victoria! It was released in 2003. As a Banksy art, this piece is well-known and is regularly in demand; its relatively low edition size contributes to its desirability – there are just 50 Queen Victoria signed prints and 500 unsigned prints.
